Application Programming Interface (API)
What is an API?
An API is a collection of rules, protocols, and tools that allow different software applications to communicate with each other. For example, using an API, developers can achieve the following:
- Exchange data between different applications
- Use functionality from other applications within your own application
- Automatically perform tasks within an application
An API can be presented in different ways, for example as a web API (which allows applications to communicate via HTTP requests) or as a library API (which allows applications to use the functionality of another application).
APIs are widely used in software development, for example when developing web applications, mobile apps or systems for automatic data processing. Well-known examples of APIs are the APIs of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, which allow developers to access the data of these networks.
